Tip 21) Wrong Traditions Causing Unbelief: 3. God Cancels Free Will When He Hardened Pharaoh's Heart

Pharaoh's hardens his heart, not God, when Moses staff turns into a snake. http://www.nuggetnetreview.com/images/67-3.jpg

[First, Pharaoh hardened his own heart numerous times before God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. Of the 12 times Scriptures records Pharaoh’s heart being hardened, the Lord harden his heart 5 times, and only after Pharaoh had hardened his own heart the first 6 times and one more time after God started hardening his heart.]

[Exo 7:13, 22 NKJV] 13 And [1]Pharaoh's heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the LORD had said. ... 22 Then the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments; and [2]Pharaoh's heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the LORD had said. [Exo 8:15, 19, 32 NKJV] 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, [3]he hardened his heart and did not heed them, as the LORD had said. ... 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This [is] the finger of God." But [4]Pharaoh's heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, just as the LORD had said. ... 32 But [5]Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also; neither would he let the people go. [Exo 9:7, 12, 34 NKJV] 7 Then Pharaoh sent, and indeed, not even one of the livestock of the Israelites was dead. But [6]the heart of Pharaoh became hard, and he did not let the people go. ... 12 But [7]the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he did not heed them, just as the LORD had spoken to Moses. ... 34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet more; and [8]he hardened his heart, he and his servants. [Exo 10:20, 27 NKJV] 20 But [9]the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go. ... 27 But [10]the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go. [Exo 11:10 NKJV] 10 So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; and [11]the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land. [Exo 14:8 NKJV] 8 And [12]the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel; and the children of Israel went out with boldness.

[The more we harden our own heart, after a while, God will no longer strive with us and turn us over to our darkened minds and hard hearts.]

[Psa 103:9 NKJV] 9 He will not always strive [with us], Nor will He keep [His anger] forever.

[2Co 4:4 NLT] 4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe. …

[Rom 1:21 NKJV] 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify [Him] as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

[1Ti 4:2 NKJV] 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

[Mar 6:51-52 NKJV] 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened.

[Like Pharaoh and the children of Israel in the wilderness, even the disciples had hard hearts after seeing miracles. Jesus walked on the water and stopped the storm, shortly after the disciples had participated in the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000. When they are amazed at a miracle it shows that they were NOT anticipating, expecting the miracle, even though they likely prayed for the storm to cease. This show of amazement or marveling is a sign of a hard heart just like Pharaoh. A hard heart is a form of unbelief. We should always remember past answered prayers and expect to see the miracles when we pray for them. To not do so could put us on a dangerous path of explaining away miracles and having our conscience seared just like Judas, Korah, and Pharaoh in the O.T. and the disciples in the N.T.]

22) Wrong Traditions Causing Unbelief: 4. Because Paul didn’t Heal Trophimus and Recommended Medicinal Treatment for Timothy, We Can’t Always Expect Healings Either

[2Ti 4:20 NKJV] 20 Erastus stayed in Corinth, but Trophimus I have left in Miletus sick.

[Some argue that because Paul didn’t heal Trophimus while he was with him, the numerous promises of healing the sick in the new Testament must not apply at times, however, there are other reasons besides this apparent failure of God’s Word that may be responsible for this situation. Reasons can include: 1) double-mindedness; 2) a source of unbelief; 3) a messenger of Satan; 4) lack of knowledge of God’s Word; 5) traditions and teachings of men that negate portions of God’s Word; and 6) other reasons that may have interfered with Trophimus’ healing. Only God knows for sure why Trophimus wasn’t healed and Timothy had to take a little wine for his stomach ailment.]

[Mar 16:18 NKJV] 18 "they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

[1Ti 5:22-23 NKJV] 22 Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people's sins; keep yourself pure. 23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities.

[Here Paul tells Timothy not to drink the water, yet Mark records that Jesus said you can drink any deadly thing and it shall not harm you. What is the harmony of these two passages? Could it be Timothy had unbelief and a hard heart like the disciples had? Perhaps a messenger for Satan, or other reasons was inhibiting his healing. Scripture doesn’t say. Still it is better to stand on the Scriptures promising healing in faith rather than to discount those passages because of our external circumstances. This passage does provide support for taking wise advantage of the blessing of remedies and medicine you may have available rather than always relying on a miracle answer to prayer. Remember, Paul’s traveling companion was Luke, a medical doctor, who recorded Paul’s ministry in the book of Acts so it is not wrong or unbelief to take advantage of the blessing of medicine and vaccines. It is wrong however to replace our reliance on God for healing, with the things of this world. And if you find yourself in a country or situation without access to medical technology, you know where to turn – God’s promises.]

[Act 28:8 NKJV] 8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him.

[Here is an instance where Paul laid hands on Publius and healed him from dysentery, a disease often contracted from drinking the water, likely the same disease Timothy was suffering from. Is God the variable in these passages or is man?]

[Num 23:19 NLT] 19 God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?

[Heb 6:17 NLT] 17 God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.

[God is unchanging therefore Man must be the variable. But we know that both Timothy and Publius did not die from dysentery. For more on praying for healing see tip 35) How to Pray for Healing & Salvation.]
